Nutrition tip of the Week

Mood Eating

Most people eat based on their mood and/or some subjective feelings of hunger. They don't eat based on what their bodies need. Think of it this way: you're about to take a long drive on a stretch of highway with no gas station. Do you fail to stop for gas before you hit the road because you're 'not in the mood?' Of course not. Think of eating in the same way. Eating fuels your metabolic engine. So it's time to start feeling like eating so that you can stop feeling like you're scrawny. by Dr. John Berardi

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Is High Fructose Corn Syrup Killing You?

There has been much debate lately about High Fructose Corn Syrup. The scientists say that it may be unhealthy for you and make you fat. Where as a manufacturer for HFCS says that is not true. Well, here are the facts as we know them right now.

Archer Daniels Midland, a company that makes HFCS, which is the main ingredient used in sodas, ketchup, barbecue sauce, cereals, snack foods and other processed foods says that HFCS does not make you fat.

Health officials and many scientists have conducted studies that show that HFCS may lead to fat accumulation, obesity and other health problems.

What they have been finding is that HFCS readily turns to fat in the body more so than conventional sugar. It is also associated with higher triglycerides and LDL (bad cholesterol).

What I think is even more important to take note of is that HFCS appears to affect your appetite so that you eat more food. It is important to note that this finding isn't just for HFCS. It also applies to artificial sweeteners. Researchers have noticed this occurrence with diet sodas that contain artificial sweeteners.

The reason is because insulin levels do not seem to increase when consuming HFCS and artificial sweeteners. This then means that leptin another hormone which is controlled by insulin does not get released either. Leptin tells your brain when you are full and to stop eating. Without this message you tend to keep eating until you have eaten too many calories.

So what this means is that HFCS may not directly make you fat because of the ingredients, but because you do not get the message that you are full you tend to overeat which results in weight gain and a higher risk for obesity.

Your take home message is to avoid all foods that contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. Go through your cabinets and look at the labels of all your foods and get rid of any foods that contain HFCS. Then the next time you are shopping make sure to choose foods that do NOT contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

High Fructose Corn Syrup doesn't make you fat by itself, but it most definitely assists with weight gain by increasing your calories consumed. Since we tend to eat many processed foods that contain HFCS our chances of overeating is greatly increased.

Here is a tip to reduce the consumption of HFCS successfully. Replace one food item a week with a non-HFCS product. Better yet replace that food item with a fruit or vegetable. This one little change can have you losing weight before you know it and living a healthier life as well.

Start Your Day Off Right

The right Breakfast can Make all the Difference

Many of us do not start our day off on the right foot. Too few people eat breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Those that do sit down for and grab a bite usually grab the wrong foods. Breakfast cereals, in general are nothing but air and sugar, candy in a box. Do not be surprised is you feel hungry by the time you reach the office.

After a night of sleep and not eating for at least 6 hours you will need to replenish. Start your day with a glass of water, nothing added just plain tap water, or if you prefer opt for the filtered stuff. Essential to a good breakfast is protein. The source is not all that important, try a breakfast with eggs, cottage cheese, lean breakfast meats, and or protein powder. Add in some fruit or a vegetable and now you have a good balanced breakfast that will get your metabolism and day off to a great start.

Chain and Plate Curls

Chain and Plate Curls For DESTROYING Your Biceps!

Want bigger, stronger biceps? Barbells and dumbells not quite cutting it anymore? This VERY

unique approach will set your biceps on fire! It'll keep maximum
tension on your biceps from start to finish.

So who doesn't want bigger, stronger biceps? Not too many trainers I know!

I've got an exercise that is going to just TRASH your biceps (in a good way, of course!)...you just need to put together a few simple pieces of equipment, found in most gyms, to do it.

Even though the basic execution of this exercise looks pretty much exactly like a dumbell curl, this is NOT your typical dumbell curl - you're going to MAKE yourself a whole new piece of equipment with which to train those biceps! And this new piece of equipment is going to put MUCH more tension on your biceps from START to FINISH than standard dumbell curls.

All you need for this exercise is a short length of chain (about 1 to 2 feet long), a clip and a single cable handle.

How To Set Up And Perform The Exercise:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, get yourself a weight plate - if you can curl more than 30 lb dumbells, use a 25 lb plate. If not, use a 10 lb plate to start. You can always add more weight to the setup later - the first step is just to know how to set up and perform the exercise.

First, run the chain through the center hold in the weight plate with a clip attached to one end. Once you've run the chain through, open up the clip and connect the other end of the chain on to make a complete loop.

Now attach the single handle onto the clip.

You've now got a weight plate hanging from a single cable handle! THAT is your new piece of training equipment.

Grasp the cable handle and stand up. Hold the cable handle with your palm facing forward. Curl the handle up to the top position, just like you were doing a dumbell or cable curl.

When you come to the top, you'll find out why this setup is so effective...instead of losing tension at the top, as can happen at the top of a dumbell or barbell curl, because the resistance is hanging from the chain, you KEEP strong tension on the biceps at the top!

This makes for a VERY tough exercise with great tension on the biceps through the whole range of motion.

And to make this exercise even MORE effective, when you're coming up to the top of the curl, let your wrist bend back and down. This will move the resistance a bit further away from your arm and increase the tension on the biceps.

On the way down, keep your palm facing forward. This will keep better tension on the biceps on the way down.

On a side note, the weight plate should be perpendicular to your body as you do the exercise (i.e. if someone was standing in front of you, they could see the entire front face of the weight plate).

If you have a second short length of chain, you can also make a second chain-and-plate combo and do this exercise both arms at the same time (or alternating), just like dumbell curls.

CONCLUSION:
------------------------------

If you're not getting the results you want with standard barbell or dumbell curls, give this "chain and plate" curl a try. The change in tension will make a BIG difference in your results!
